Black Box iCOMPEL Signage Used in Large-Scale Corporate and Education Networks

Black Box iCOMPEL Signage Used in Large-Scale Corporate and Education Networks PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA, June 9, 2011 — Black Box Corporation (NASDAQ:BBOX), an industry-leading provider of voice communications, data infrastructure, and technology products, announced today two major successful signage implementations for a leading global corporation and a leading Pennsylvania college.

Black Box is modeling these two implementations as demonstration and baseline projects to create case studies and other resources that will help VARS looking to expand their digital signage business.

The first implementation was a signage project for Joy Mining Machinery, a worldwide manufacturer of underground mining equipment. Through digital signage, Joy Mining is able to establish more consistent corporate branding at all its sites and improve real-time communications with facilities in the U.S. and elsewhere.

To do this, Joy Mining chose Black Box’s iCOMPEL™, a integrated hardware/software solution for simple, affordable content delivery and management.

Nearly 55 of Joy Mining’s facilities now receive digital content in their lobbies, with all content controlled by iCOMPEL. Carrying the utility of the iCOMPEL platform forward, Joy Mining also uses the system for internal communications, such as disseminating engineering performance metrics to staff and posting job bids and awards in its union facilities.

Joy Mining also has started using digital screens on the factory floor to display “Kanban” inventory information in real time. By switching to digital displays, the company has enhanced its “just-in-time” inventory processes and intends to eventually eliminate paper tickets for the relaying of inventory information.

The second implementation is Black Box’s work with LaRoche College, a Catholic college of 1350 students in Pittsburgh. With its signage project, the college wanted to enhance and centralize campus communications with students and staff, with content displayed in the campus dining hall, library, fitness center, and athletic department.

Like Joy Mining, the college chose Black Box’s iCOMPEL platform for its signage implementation. Black Box handled the site survey, system design, and installation of the iCOMPEL units, the displays, and their mounts. La Roche College staff installed the cabling and provided power and network connectivity to each display and to each ICOMPEL subscriber unit.

In this deployment, all subscriber players receive VGA signals over network cabling from an iCOMPEL appliance located in a central data closet. This appliance acts as a server for content streamed to the players, helping the college move one step closer to its goal of centralizing the management of campus information. La Roche College staff members simply log on to the iCOMPEL system to access and upload videos, images, and other signage content. The players regularly ping the publisher appliance for any changes and update the screens as needed.
